This book describes the trip across the Mediterranean Sea that many people take to escape from their country of origin (either for political, religious, sexual preferences…), who are in fear of their lives and shows the names of only some of them, as many cannot be identified. In this instance, I’ve only highlighted – due to the theme, sea – those who perished when, or as a result of, crossing the Mediterranean Sea.
I took these names from a list of more than 40 000 refugees, asylum seekers and migrants who have lost their lives within or on the borders of Europe since 1993 to date, which is compiled and updated every year by the Amsterdam-based organisation UNITED for Intercultural Action.
This book is dedicated to them all and honours their destiny.
Booklet
6.5 x 12 cm
Booklet that goes with the artist book. There is an original and four copies.
Content: technical details, colophon, and the abstract made of a list of more than 40 000 refugees, asylum seekers and migrants who have lost their lives within or on the borders of Europe from 1993 to July 2020, which is compiled and updated every year by the Amsterdam-based organisation UNITED for Intercultural Action.
The list in the booklet only shows the people who died in the seas that separate their lands from European lands that have been identified by name.
Experiences
This artist book received very good feedback, among them from Ezgi Keskinsoy, a Turkish paper artist based in Germany, who told me that it reminded her of a friend’s song, Şevket Akıncı, which had just been recorded and with whom I exchanged a few words.
With his permission, I am happy to share this beautiful and meaningful song with you.
One of the booklet copies was sent to the UK at the request of artist-writer Melanie Shearn, to form part of her project 5 Foot Storyhouse.
